Abstract

This paper focuses on the issue of the effectiveness of propeller guards as injury prevention devices. This issue is addressed through the application of fault tree analysis techniques. It is shown that fault tree analysis is appropriate but cannot be applied at present without further study to collect additional basic data on injury severity and injury frequency. A direct approach is suggested based on knowledge of injury severity and frequency and this approach is modified to fit within a fault tree analysis context.
