Abstract

This paper investigates the issue of energy efficient transmission of data in a wireless sensor network. The notion of energy per successfully received bit (ESB), which is defined as the ratio of total energy required to send a packet and expected amount of data per packet, is used to find the optimal setting of transmission energy and hop distance to achieve energy efficiency. Analytical solution for optimal hop distance, transmit energy, and packet size that minimize the ESB, for a given modulation scheme and a given channel model are determined. Numerical optimization and simulation results are also presented. The results are beneficial for selecting the optimal node density and transmit energy for a given modulation scheme, which gives minimum ESB. Alternately, the best modulation scheme can be chosen for a given hop distance and for a given channel model.
