UDP, multiprocessor, performance characterization, communication systems, scalability
In this paper, we present the performance analysis of UDP in a high performance large-scale multiprocessor system running the SolarisTM Operating System. We discuss the critical data path and all the related components for transmitting and receiving UDP messages, analyze the interactions between these components, and identify the potential bottlenecks. Packet drop behaviors, which are essential for UDP performance, are studied in detail. Based on the baseline investigation, we further discuss how the scalability of processors affects the UDP performance. We show how the appropriate number of processors can achieve good UDP throughput and various approaches to improve it.
