Abstract

For industrial closed-loop control, appropriate assessment of critical point parameters is very important towards proper tuning of proportional–integral–derivative controllers. The first-order plus time delay (FOPTD) model is quite well accepted for realizing a good number of industrial processes. We propose a simple experi- mental technique consisting of relay feedback test with two different hysteresis bands towards enhanced assessment of the critical point for FOPTD processes. Experimental findings demonstrate that the critical parameters assessed by the proposed method are fairly close to the actual one compared to conventional relay and acclaimed preload relay feedback techniques. Efficacy of the proposed scheme is demonstrated through a simulation study on FOPTD models and its real-time evaluation on two separate laboratory-scale temperature control systems.
