Frictionally Damped SDOF Oscillator: Experimental Realization and Friction Modeling for Small Displacements

The damping of structural vibrations using dry friction is an effective control method for many vibration problems. The strong nonlinear nature of friction has however made the theoretical and experimental investigations much more difficult than for linear control methods. This paper first outlines an experimental setup implementing an ideal frictionally damped Single-Degree-Of-Freedom (SDOF) oscillator through the use of an electrodynamic shaker to study friction damping. By relating the shaker current to the force input and including the shaker armature dynamics in the modelling of the experimental setup, it is shown that the ideal frictionally damped SDOF can be realized. The second part of this paper intends to determine a suitable friction model for small amplitude (<100 m) frictionally damped vibrations. Two friction models are presented, which are the KFM algebraic model and the LuGre dynamic model. Experimental results are then compared to simulation results to show that the LuGre dynamic model captures very well the behaviour of friction for small amplitude vibrations in contrast with the KFM algebraic model.
